Things to think when you are thinking to leave your first job and first company
Have been working for almost 9 years in different industries after my graduation, I have met a lot of colleagues and becoming good friends, and also somehow met old mates from the universities, talking about jobs, toughness in life and maybe, their bosses, etc.
I realised that some mates were struggling in between staying or leaving their first companies due to different circumstances. I know that this is not just only happening to my friend, but maybe anyone over the world, not quite sure how to work them out.
I have thought out some questions and things you could have to review yourself and the environment, before your final decision.
Staying in the job from the beginning until retirement?
There is one rumour about the business nature in Japan that one person should only work in one workplace for their lives in order to show the “loyalty” to the company, and that sounds a little bit ridiculous, isn’t it?
A real story from one of my friend who is currently working in a mid-firm for a long while. These few years she had been talking that he would like to leave her firm for a long time, but still not yet quitted at this moment. In fact she thought that her company did not treat her well but only because of her “loyalty” since beginning so she have been staying here until now. In addition, she was so afraid that to change her job because she would face to a new and unfamiliarized working space.
I would say that she might have been fallen into a “comfort zone” and she was trying to give herself some excuses. It would be very tough for her to leave the position right now, until a better chance coming to her face.
Remember one quote:
Chances are not crushing you to your face when you want.
So, please re-consider again if you do really love your job and staying in the same firm forever.
(For sure, you may also need to consider that if you could find another job easily. In my hometown, we do have a lot of positions emptied due to having a huge demand for the co-workers, so turnover rate is high)
Job Development, and also self development
I heard that some interviewers hated the interviewees to say: “I would like to learn more from my job and develop myself in the future.” Yes, they hates that, but it is good for a co-worker.
If your job could have “development” to the skills, management, communication, or even the job is rotational and flexible to learn a lot of things, that would be one of the best jobs ever. However if a job is too dull to work, there might not be able to develop more during your working time. What I am telling you about here is not studying something else during your working time, but you always get something during your normal daily jobs, no matter skills, management, or even knowledge which is out of your professionalism.
In addition of the self development, a job development is also an important factor to you. Job development also relates to the self development because of your title will be promoted. Does your company provide you chance to have the promotion? Or your company could provide some cross-training to different department to improve your management skills?
As of that, think a little bit about your company right now — if you are getting more, or you just like a robot sitting in front of the monitor or those stacks of papers for you to work only? Does the company offers you enough incentives for the further development?
Competitiveness
Okay, some people might doubt:
Oh wait, why should I need to have to work on my own development?
I just want to make my routine job to be completed everyday.
However, you would never know when will the business crisis happened to your life. Say for an example, one day if the economic situations went bad for the whole world and a lot of people would need to find a new job, a lot of co-workers would become your “enemies”. As from the company aspect, they would like to hire the best candidate.
Comparatively, a person would different types of working experience are tended to be more competitive than a person who is just sitting on the same firm within the same period. Certain types of working experience could bring lots of benefits.
